Arctic Adventure of Alyssa
Dr. Yang and Alyssa embarked on a two-week expedition to Unalaska Island, Alaska. They worked with the DOE's Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory to study how WWII-era infrastructure and climate change are affecting native communities.
They collected soil samples and collaborated with other researchers while participating in a local Culture Camp, sharing environmental expertise with the community.

Anil received Ellen Gonter Award
Congratulations to Anil on receiving the Ellen Gonter Award from the American Chemical Society! 🎉
This esteemed award is presented to outstanding graduate students from universities for exceptional research.
Well done, Anil, on this impressive achievement!
Travis was featured as Faces of the Pack
Travis was highlighted in Nevada Today, delving into his research on water rights and sharing insights about his upbringing on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, as well as the Native American Fee Waiver. You can access the article here. Additionally, catch his WEFTEC interview where he discusses the importance of integrating perspectives from Indigenous cultures into the construction of sustainable water systems.
Anil’s recent work was featured in ‘Nevada Today’
UNR’s official news and information site ‘Nevada Today’ featured an article about his recent published paper. As the site mentioned ‘Anil Timilsina’s work may help researchers better understand the impacts of climate change.’ The paper was published in ACS Analytical Chemistry. Check out the feature here and the paper here.
Presented our work at ACS Fall Meeting ‘23
The Yang Lab showcased their research at the latest meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS). Dr. Yang was invited to deliver two talks during the event. Abrar and Anil presented their work in one of the geochemistry sessions, while Alyssa shared her recent findings in poster sessions.
Abrar & Anil went to collect samples from wildfire-affected boreal forests in Canada
Abrar and Anil undertook a week-long field trip to collect soil affected by wildfires from Red Lake, Ontario. The samples will be used to analyze how wildfires can impact soil organic carbon and study its long-term effects.
RET Project
In the summer of '23, three middle school teachers dedicated six weeks to hands-on training in various experimental procedures conducted in the lab as part of the Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Site project. Additionally, they collaborated on the development of a curriculum tailored for middle school students, with a specific focus on renewable clean energy.
